The liver’s remarkable capacity to repair itself stems from its unique structure, yet this regenerative power has limits. A gastroenterologist, nutritionist, and hepatologist named Natalya Panina spoke with socialbites.ca about habits that can damage the liver and hinder its healing ability.

The most common factor is excess weight.

Obesity creates a fertile ground for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Fat deposits in liver cells can injure those cells directly. Obesity does not just trigger inflammation in the liver; in some cases it can contribute to the development of cirrhosis and can worsen other health conditions, Panina explains.

Damage from medications is another concern. Any treatment should be guided by a physician. The careless use of supplements, vitamins, antibiotics, pain relievers, birth control pills, and even acetaminophen can lead to toxic hepatitis, according to the hepatologist.

Alcohol poses a clear risk as well. There is no safe level of drinking for the liver. For men, doses exceeding roughly 40 grams of alcohol per day and for women more than about 20 grams are considered risky. Regular consumption can lead to alcoholic liver disease, which may progress to cirrhosis, she notes.

Choices high in animal fats and trans fats, often found in fast foods, also threaten liver health. These fats can raise bad cholesterol and create problems in both the liver and cardiovascular system. In addition, excessive fructose intake is harmful, especially when it comes from added sugars in soft drinks. A surplus of simple carbohydrates can contribute to fatty liver disease, the specialist adds.

Inflammation in the liver can be linked to imbalances in the gut, including bacterial overgrowth, particularly when antibiotics are used without medical necessity, or when the diet is monotonous and fiber intake is low.

These factors together paint a clear picture: lifestyle choices have a direct impact on liver health and its capacity to recover. By prioritizing balanced nutrition, moderate alcohol consumption, and appropriate medical oversight for medications, individuals can support a healthier liver over the long term.
