The Guardia Civil and National Police officers detained a 24-year-old man from Algeria in the Alicante port area after he threatened patrons at a nightclub and then jumped into the sea to flee.
The incident occurred on the 24th of the current month at a well-known nightclub in the port of Alicante, following a report that a man had been throwing glass bottles at people.
Upon police arrival, witnesses at the scene stated that the individual was hurling glass bottles at several groups and threatening those present with the jagged neck of a broken bottle while disrobing and shouting threatening phrases.
After speaking with the venue security supervisor, the officers were told that, in response to the commotion, the bouncers and managers confronted the man. In that moment, he walked toward the sea and jumped into the water.
The officers then observed the man remaining in the water about 30 meters from the dock in a restricted bathing area designated for port traffic. For safety reasons, boat traffic in the area was briefly halted while warning him to come out of the water was issued.
The agents repeatedly requested that the man exit the water, but he ignored the commands and continued to threaten them. Fatigue appeared to affect him, and the officers moved in to help him out. At one point, the man attacked a police officer with the neck of a broken bottle, forcing the officers to dodge the strike.
Given the ongoing resistance and aggressive behavior, the authorities requested maritime support from the Alicante Maritime Service via the 091 command center. The Rio Oja, the maritime support vessel, was dispatched to assist the National Police units already present on scene.
As the Rio Oja approached with its auxiliary craft, the man began injuring himself with the glass shard, causing cuts to his neck. The Guardia Civil and National Police officers, working together, restrained him and managed to remove the shard from his possession, placing him aboard the police boat to prevent further harm.
During the transport to shore and the ensuing arrest on the vessel, the detainee exhibited extreme aggression toward the officers, repeatedly attempting to leap back into the sea and trying to cause others to fall from the boat.
Once on land, the detainee received medical attention from an ambulance and was later taken to Alicante General Hospital due to multiple bleeding neck wounds sustained during the self-injury incident with the bottle’s neck.
The joint operation by the Guardia Civil and National Police proved crucial to the arrest. He faces charges of serious threats, attempted assault on a law enforcement officer, resistance, and disobedience, following a coordinated response by both authorities.
The detainee, a 24-year-old Algerian national, was then placed in the custody of the Alicante Juzgado de Guardia for further proceedings.
