Investigation Update: Arrest in Zaragoza for Suspected Infant Homicide

Investigation report outlines arrest and detention of a mother in Zaragoza

In a Guardia de Zaragoza court, Tatiana Diguele Nuñez was ordered to prison while the police investigate a case described by officials as a suspected murder. The court acted on the basis of available information that the eight-month-old baby, who died in the city, had been left by a nearby park after being found near a public facility. Local reporters confirmed that the detainee gave a detailed account of events to the authorities and later admitted involvement. She initially suggested that some men from a group had abducted the child, but she then provided a sequence of details about the incident and guided the police to the exact location where the body lay.

During a court appearance on the same day, Nuñez invoked her right to remain silent about the facts in front of the prosecutor and answered questions solely from her defense attorney, Alejandro Soteras. He and the defense team described her as experiencing a difficult personal and emotional situation. Despite these statements, the judge granted the request from the public prosecutor to keep her in a penal institution in Zuera, processing the case under homicide charges. The defense, for its part, asked that medical experts assess her condition due to a self-reported history of substance use that could affect mental state.

The mother was brought to the police custody facilities early in the morning after remaining under police guard since the previous Sunday at a central station. The homicide and missing persons units worked within the 72-hour window to formalize the presentation of the suspect to judicial authorities as the author of a homicide crime.

Forensic results from the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Aragon indicated a death by asphyxia for the infant. The examination did not reveal injuries that would point to resuscitation attempts. Taken together with the statements made by Nuñez, investigators concluded that the death was the result of an intentional act by the mother.

The investigation concluded after nearly a week of inquiry following a report from the infant’s father about the disappearance of the child and the mother. The couple had been living in the Delicias district of Zaragoza before the events. The father returned from work to find the home empty of both mother and child, a situation that raised concerns and triggered searches and police operations. The mother later left the child deceased in a public space near a cultural center, according to initial findings. She was later found to have wandered through the area and eventually placed the body where it was discovered by authorities.

Early in the investigation, authorities activated procedures for missing persons, including requests to monitor phone activity related to the suspect. When questioned by officers at the police headquarters, the suspect offered inconsistent statements, eventually breaking down and admitting to the killing. She led the investigators to the exact spot where the child’s body was abandoned, near the CaixaForum building. The autopsy and the subsequent police procedures led to the formalization of the case as homicide, with the body transported for official processing and examination. The case markers pointed to a grave breach of domestic trust and a fatal outcome tied to the child’s persistent crying, which the suspect described in conversations with the police and prosecutors. The body was recovered with no signs of life, and authorities proceeded with the appropriate legal measures after the judge’s authorization for the autopsy and the subsequent steps in the investigation.
