Iberdrola has secured three new long-term clean energy agreements, or power purchase agreements (PPAs), with Vodafone across Spain, Portugal, and Germany at competitive prices. Both companies have confirmed in separate statements their shared commitment to expanding PPAs and advancing sustainability initiatives throughout Europe.

The new deals bring Iberdrola’s total support for Vodafone to 410 gigawatt hours (GWh) of photovoltaic energy, a move designed to accelerate Vodafone’s journey toward zero energy and bolster energy resilience. This energy amount translates to the annual electricity needs of more than 117,000 homes and underscores the scope of the collaboration.

Under the terms, Vodafone Spain will receive 280 GWh per year from a photovoltaic plant being built in Cáceres, Spain. Vodafone Portugal will obtain 80 GWh per year from a newly constructed solar facility located in Palencia, Spain.

For Vodafone Germany, the agreement covers all energy produced by the Boldekow photovoltaic plant, Iberdrola’s first solar project in the country. The plant will have a capacity of 56 MWp and will be located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is planned to be fully operational in 2024.

Beyond the PPAs, Iberdrola and Vodafone share a broader aim to reduce CO2 emissions and advance energy transition goals. Iberdrola has already installed more than 140 electric vehicle chargers at Vodafone’s primary facilities in Spain and provides ongoing management and optimization services for Vodafone’s operations.

Aytor Moso, Iberdrola’s Global Account Director, noted that the partnership aligns both companies with a cleaner and smarter future for customers and communities.

He emphasized that Iberdrola and Vodafone are global supporters of clean energy, maintaining projects worldwide that enable multinational companies like Vodafone to embed sustainability across all business activities. The ongoing deals illustrate how strategic collaborations can unlock new renewable energy projects and accelerate the deployment of photovoltaic solar plants.

Joakim Reiter, Vodafone Group Director of External and Corporate Affairs, highlighted that these Europe-wide agreements reinforce Vodafone’s commitment to delivering electricity from 100% renewable sources to customers.

He added that the arrangements provide Vodafone with greater energy security and long-term price certainty as the company works toward net-zero power by 2030. Reiter also referenced the Paris Agreement, noting the global challenge of ensuring a substantial shift toward carbon-free and renewable electricity.

He described today’s announcements as a strong example of how telecom operators can accelerate the transition by becoming key players in deploying renewable energy.

In addition, both Iberdrola and Vodafone are exploring additional options for long-term energy supply contracts to support further emissions reductions and other sustainable projects across Europe, reinforcing ambitions to decarbonize their operations in the future.

From Iberdrola’s perspective, securing long-term buyers for clean electricity enables the company to expedite project construction and commissioning. This approach reinforces the strategy of signing bilateral agreements that guarantee clean, sustainable energy for large customers at competitive, stable prices.
