Civil Guard officers arrested a Ukrainian truck driver after a dangerous episode on a major Spanish highway. The vehicle was weaving through traffic for more than three kilometers, prompting quick action by road safety agents. A breathalyzer test later revealed a level nine times above the legal limit for professionals.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of September 25 along the A-70 motorway near the interchange with the N-338 in the municipality of Alicante. Members of the Alicante Traffic Detachment were conducting routine surveillance on major transit routes when they observed a hazardous situation developing in real time. The behavior was erratic enough to draw immediate concern from the officers, who stepped in to prevent a potential catastrophe on a busy corridor.

The truck stopped only after its tire blew out, ending a dangerous sequence that had put other road users at serious risk. The vehicle repeatedly crossed into multiple lanes and veered toward guardrails on both sides without using turn signals, forcing nearby drivers to brake and swerve to avoid a collision.

According to the Civil Guard, the reckless driving caused visible damage to the metal guard rail on the right and to the central median of the highway. The dangerous maneuvering persisted for more than three kilometers, creating a hazardous environment that jeopardized the safety of all motorists in the vicinity. Several drivers in the area had to slow down abruptly and adjust their paths to stay clear of the truck’s unpredictable movements.

Multiple attempts were made by Civil Guard patrols to halt the vehicle, but the driver did not comply. The situation changed only after the truck suffered a tire damage that effectively stopped it in its tracks. When the stop finally occurred, officers observed clear signs of intoxication. The Alicante Test Team then took charge of the investigation and administered a breathalyzer test, which recorded a result well above the permissible limit for professional drivers, at nine times the allowed level.

The Alicante Command stressed that the rapid response of the Civil Guard likely prevented a major accident under the circumstances, underscoring the daily commitment to road safety and the protection of travelers from irresponsible driving behind the wheel.

The arrested driver faced charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence. According to the Criminal Code, penalties for these offenses can include imprisonment from six months to two years and a suspension of the right to operate a motor vehicle or moped for a period ranging from one to six years, depending on the severity and context of the offense.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the court through the relevant procedures. The Alicante Instruction Court No. 5 decided to release him under precautionary measures, including the revocation of his driver’s license, while ongoing investigations continued. The Civil Guard affirmed its ongoing commitment to road safety and to protecting citizens from careless and dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
