Researchers from a leading microbiology institute in Guangzhou reported a notable presence of bacteria that release antioxidant compounds within the intestinal tracts of Chinese centenarians. The findings were shared in the journal npj Biofilms Microbiomes, indicating a potential link between gut microbes and longevity in this population.

The study examined the gut microbiota of 247 healthy individuals from Jiaoling, a city often referred to as the “city of 100 years.” Among the participants, 18 were over a century old, while 19 were between 81 and 99 years old. By analyzing stool samples, the team traced the microbial landscape across ages and highlighted differences associated with advanced years.

Across the 107 bacterial families detected in the samples, shifts in population levels emerged as age advanced. In particular, the researchers observed increases in lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Metanobrevibacteria, and Roseburia among those older than 80, suggesting these groups may contribute to the gut environment linked with longer life spans.

The scientists also mapped the genetic activity of the gut microbes, focusing on genes involved in producing antioxidant substances. They identified the most active antioxidant-producing strain as Lactobacillus plantarum when tested in controlled intragastric administration. In animal models, this strain was associated with reduced oxidative stress in the liver and kidneys, illustrating a possible mechanism by which gut microbes could influence systemic health and aging processes.

While the results hint at a meaningful role for gut microbiota in extending life, the researchers caution that further work is needed to confirm causality, understand the underlying mechanisms, and explore applicability to broader populations beyond Jiaoling and similar demographic groups.
