Redexis, a comprehensive energy infrastructure company, has launched construction on a pioneering project to introduce a 100% green hydrogen pipeline, designed to feed the natural gas transport network. Located on the island of Mallorca as part of the Green Hysland initiative, the project aims to deliver a clean energy channel that supports decarbonization efforts and the transition to a circular economy. The project is funded with an investment exceeding 3 million euros and is expected to advance the island’s sustainable energy goals in the near term.

The hydrogen line is engineered to cut emissions by roughly 1,265 to 3,829 tons of CO2, marking a crucial step toward a NetZero society. By enabling reduced carbon intensity in energy supply, it supports national and regional decarbonization targets and helps create a cleaner energy system for residents and businesses alike.

The 3.2-kilometer pipeline stretches from the anticipated unloading site where tube trailers depart Lloseta to the injection point, transporting renewable hydrogen. In the initial phase, it is planned to inject up to 190 tons of hydrogen per year (about 6 GWh annually), with potential to increase to 575 tons per year (20 GWh per year). This upgrade stands to benefit more than 115,000 households and 2,000 commercial and industrial users, offering a sustainable and fully renewable fuel option for daily energy needs.

Redexis became the first company in Spain to obtain administrative and enforcement authorization from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenges (MITECO) to install a green hydrogen injection system at a key transport gas pipeline location, specifically in San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus on Mallorca. This authorization marks the first renewable hydrogen injection plant approved for Spain’s gas system, enabling hydrogen to be injected into the natural gas network, which comprises over 160 kilometers of transmission pipelines and about 1,150 kilometers of distribution networks that serve the entire island.

Fidel López Soria, the CEO of Redexis, stated that this hydrogen pipeline represents a meaningful advance in both national and European decarbonization efforts. He noted that it will bring hydrogen closer to sectors such as industry, commercial services, and domestic applications, including hotels. He described the project as a significant milestone for Spain and an important step in advancing decarbonization on the island.

This infrastructure is part of the European Green Hysland subsidy program, which brings together more than 30 organizations, companies, and technology centers, including Enagás Renovable and Acciona Energía. The European Union, through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, has committed €10 million to support building the infrastructure needed to realize Mallorca’s renewable hydrogen ecosystem from 2021 to 2025. The initiative aims to connect the full hydrogen value chain—from production and transport to distribution and end-use consumption of renewable hydrogen.

Redexis operates as a responsible energy infrastructure company focused on the energy transition and economic development. Its strategy centers on maintaining and expanding natural gas and LPG transport and distribution networks, advancing energy efficiency, mobility solutions, and renewable gas projects such as biomethane and green hydrogen within a circular economy framework. The company pursues steady growth, with substantial investments since 2010 and a large job footprint across its networks. In 2023, the GRESB Sustainability and Infrastructure Index awarded the highest ESG score, reinforcing Redexis’s leadership in environmental, social, and governance practices and complementing Moody’s ESG Solutions evaluations for sustainability and CSR excellence.
