The National Police have arrested a 44-year-old man in Alicante on charges related to placing a GPS tracker on the car of his former partner’s current boyfriend. The suspect, who already has a dozen complaints for gender violence from just over three years ago, is accused of a crime against privacy, illegal surveillance, and coercion. The ex-wife asserts that he has violated multiple times the protection order and the prohibition on contact with her, yet he remains at large in the eyes of the law until proven otherwise. Police sources confirm the arrest was carried out by officers from the Family and Women Unit in Alicante after a formal complaint from a Russian woman aged 47. The victim had previously reported her ex-partner for abuse on numerous occasions and told investigators that the suspect, who works in information technology, could remotely access her computer and impersonate her identity to obtain personal loans in her name.

Find at the workshop

The GPS device, a model from Tkmars, was found by workers at a workshop where the suspect was repairing the vehicle of the complainant’s partner. While the car was being lifted on a hoist, workers spotted a small black device mounted under the vehicle, a tracking tool capable of providing real time location data and detailed route history for the vehicle.

The car owner and his partner contacted the police and pointed suspicion at the ex-partner, whom they had reported for abuse and who had an active court order prohibiting contact in any form.

The police recovered the tracker to inspect its contents. The device allowed live tracking and stored the routes taken and precise locations. It was equipped with a SIM card that appeared to have been registered in the name of the ex-partner, but police investigations established that it was linked to the suspect. Investigators believe the suspect, with access to the victim’s data, arranged the SIM card under the victim’s name to mislead authorities and place blame on her for the tracking device.

Before the victim discovered the GPS unit, she had explained that she was in the car with her current partner when her ex-boyfriend suddenly appeared and then left once he saw them. She was puzzled by how he seemed to know where they were, a doubt that was resolved when the workshop revealed the tracker. Investigators think he may have gone to the site to replace the device’s battery and contaminate the evidence.

After collecting all the evidence, officers arrested the ex-partner in Alicante and turned the case over to the local court for further proceedings. The investigation continues as authorities examine additional data and device logs to determine the full extent of the intrusion and the motive behind the placement of the tracker.
