A former veterinarian in the Voronezh region to stand trial on negligence charges
In the Voronezh region, a 43-year-old former veterinarian will face court on charges of negligence, according to the regional Investigation Department of the RF IC. The case centers on actions connected to meat safety and the handling of animals diagnosed with a serious disease.
Investigators say that in August 2023, a woman who worked in the department responsible for veterinary and sanitary examination and laboratory control at the Voronezh City Animal Disease Control Station allowed the meat of an animal infected with anthrax to be consumed. The meat was distributed within the city market network.
Further details allege that a resident of the Paninsky district slaughtered a cattle unit on a private farm in violation of sanitary rules and did not submit the animal to preventive and pre-slaughter examination. The animal had not received vaccination against the dangerous disease, despite a vaccination that had taken place in April 2023. The meat from this animal was then sold to vendors at the city market through acquaintances.
The investigation asserts that the veterinarian was aware there was no documentation for the meat and nevertheless allowed its distribution. Later, anthrax was confirmed in the product.
During preliminary inquiry, the former veterinarian fully admitted guilt. This case highlights the risks of improper oversight in animal health and the potential public health consequences when meat safety protocols are not followed.
In a separate but related matter, authorities note that there have been prior cases involving the sale of horse meat contaminated with anthrax, underscoring ongoing concerns about meat safety and the importance of strict sanitary controls in veterinary practice.
