Ford Spain faced another challenging year, marking its second consecutive year of losses after a notable corporate transition. The company completed a change of shareholder structure and exited a subsidiary in Mexico from its balance sheet. Official filings show a healthy top-line improvement, with turnover advancing from 5,553 million euros to 7,521 million euros, a rise of roughly 35 percent. Yet the trading results also reveal widening losses, growing 75 percent higher to 34 million euros in 2021 and to 61 million euros in 2022. The group is actively evolving its production model to align with electrification trends, a strategic move that was formally disclosed yesterday with a request for assistance from the Electric and Connected Vehicle Division. The shift signals Ford Spain’s commitment to electrified mobility and the broader transformation underway in its Spanish operations.
45% production increase
At Almussafes, Ford continues to orient the site toward export markets, with around 95 percent of output destined for customers abroad. The Valencia plant produced 245,560 vehicles in the most recent year, up from 168,426 units the year before, reflecting a substantial production acceleration. The calculation indicates a close to 45 percent uplift. The microchip shortage and related supply disruptions last year compelled the company to trim capacity temporarily and implement a series of temporary layoff measures. Looking back further, the Valencia facility manufactured 380,575 vehicles in 2028, 345,612 in 2019, and 235,344 in 2020, a span that captures the impact of the pandemic era on production volumes.
records
In terms of sales volume within Spain, Ford registered 44,790 units, marking a decrease of 4.8 percent versus the prior year. By year-end 2022, Ford of Spain operated through a network comprising 68 dealer facilities, including 29 authorized stores. The nationwide network also encompassed 196 authorized service points, with 170 contracted to dealers for exhibition and sale of Ford vehicles.
The Almussafes plant delivered notable production by model, including 73,287 units of the Ford Transit Connect, 153,584 of the Kuga, 4,025 Mondeos, 8,512 S-Max, and 6,152 Galaxy. Engine production totaled 356,435 units, representing a 24 percent year-over-year increase, and a remarkable 88 percent of these engines were destined for export outside Spain, underscoring Ford Spain’s role in the global supply chain.
Mexican subsidiary
One of the principal drivers behind Ford Spain’s financial profile has been a change in the ownership structure of its Mexican subsidiary. In fiscal year 2022, the company adjusted its participation in Ford Mexico, moving from full ownership to a reduced stake, a shift that influenced consolidated results and highlights the ongoing strategic realignment across the group’s Latin American operations. These changes reflect the broader approach to optimizing regional investments while maintaining the strength of Ford’s cross-border manufacturing and distribution network.
