FOC – Freedom of Choice

Sometimes a pause is needed to recharge, to breathe new air, and to approach things with renewed energy. That is the mindset behind the evolution of a Alicante favorite. After a decade of leading dining experiences in the city, the team behind FOC chose to close the restaurant in July 2016. The decision reflected a moment of reflection that allowed for a fresh culinary direction to emerge, one that reimagines Mediterranean classics through the lens of Italian influence while prioritizing service, quality, and value for every budget.

Following a period of personal and professional exploration, Ángel Orts embarked on new journeys alongside his family. He expanded his horizons first as an executive chef and culinary educator in Tarragona, then across several regions of Britain. His experience culminated in a pivotal role as Sous Chef in the Balmoral Hotel kitchen, a landmark that represents the heritage and prestige of hospitality in the United Kingdom.

After seven years of experimenting with ideas and refining his culinary language, Ángel Orts and Susana Pérez, now two of the FOC partners, decided to launch a new venture built on the same spirit. Freedom of Choice opened its doors on Captain Segarra Street, in the heart of Alicante, just steps from the city’s Central Market. The new concept carries forward the essence of FOC while inviting diners to explore a modern, updated menu that speaks to today’s diverse tastes.

The philosophy is clear: while the past remains a source of inspiration, the present moment governs how food is prepared and presented. The menu is designed so that everyone can find something to enjoy, regardless of dietary preferences. The focus remains on high quality, thoughtful plating, and accessible pricing that makes excellent dining reachable for a broad audience.

FOC – Freedom of Choice stands as a contemporary interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine, where traditional flavors are celebrated and reimagined with modern technique. The space is crafted to be welcoming and inclusive, inviting curious diners to explore a spectrum of dishes that cater to different lifestyles and choices. The experience emphasizes balance between texture, aroma, and visual appeal, ensuring that each plate communicates care and creativity to the guest.

Location: C/ Capitan Segarra, 29, Alicante. This central street places the restaurant in a vibrant part of the city, easy to reach for locals and visitors alike.

Working hours are set to accommodate both daytime and evening dining: 8am to 4pm, Monday through Saturday, with dinners offered Thursday through Saturday. The approach is practical and flexible, designed to fit varied routines while maintaining high standards in every service.

The new venture is rooted in a philosophy of openness and choice, encouraging guests to discover flavors that align with their preferences. It offers a curated selection of dishes that balance Mediterranean and Italian influences, crafted with seasonal produce and thoughtful presentation. Patrons can expect a menu that respects tradition while embracing contemporary techniques, resulting in a dining experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. It’s a place where conversation and curiosity about food are welcomed, and where the kitchen embraces transparency in its craft and sourcing.

In summary, FOC – Freedom of Choice is not merely a relaunch; it is a renewed promise to the city. A commitment to quality, accessibility, and a modern interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine that welcomes everyone to explore, enjoy, and experience food with clarity and joy.
