In Figueres, a town in Girona, a tragic house fire claimed the life of a 56-year-old man, while a woman the same age sustained serious injuries. She was initially taken to the province’s reference hospital, Trueta, and then transferred to Barcelona for specialized care. The catastrophe unfolded on a Wednesday evening, with the Generalitat Fire Department reporting that a dog also perished in the blaze. The incident began in an apartment on the first floor of a building situated on Calle del Angel, drawing seven firefighting crews to the scene.

On arrival, firefighters faced intense flames both inside the home and on the exterior, and they worked with ladders and hoses to gain access and begin a meticulous interior attack. Despite their efforts, two residents were found at the site: the woman who died inside the apartment and another woman who had been evacuated. The latter was transported by air to Vall d’Hebron Hospital in critical condition after being moved from Girona and receiving urgent care from a helicopter crew.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, the regional police, have taken charge of the investigation into the fire’s causes. The fire was declared extinguished at 22:37 after crews conducted a thorough search of the affected area, which included assessing rooms that had been damaged and ensuring there were no hidden embers. Two residents on the floors above the affected apartment were temporarily confined indoors as a precaution while the building was secured and investigated for structural safety.

Once the flames were under control, firefighters carried out ventilation to clear the building of smoke and monitored the air with a gas detector to confirm safety for anyone remaining inside or nearby. The initial inspection of the four-story block confirmed that the building’s structural integrity had not been compromised by the fire, allowing authorities to proceed with containment and safety checks without fear of a collapse or major damage to the framework.

Supporting operations included the arrival of two police units and the Medical Emergency System, along with three patrol cars and the Mossos d’Esquadra investigative team. Soldiers from the Figueres Local Police also participated in coordinating the response and safeguarding the neighborhood as responders carried out their duties. The scene remained under scrutiny as investigators pieced together what led to the dramatic events, and officials continued to manage the situation with the urgency such a dwelling tragedy requires, aiming to provide answers to the families affected and to prevent a recurrence in the community.
