Thirteen people lost their lives in a spate of fatal crashes that occurred along intercity routes. On May 1, ten of the victims were vulnerable road users, including six drivers, two cyclists and two pedestrians who were struck during the day.
Data provided to Efe by the General Directorate of Traffic confirm that these fatal incidents happened between three in the afternoon on Friday and eight in the evening on the following Monday. Many of the events required hospital care for the injured.
During this period there were two fatal crashes on the same Monday. One occurred on the A-7 near Marbella, Malaga, where a truck collided with a cyclist, resulting in a fatality. The second crash took place on the LE motorway near León, while in Cuadros municipality another cyclist was fatally struck by a tractor.
On Sunday, ten people died in nine separate traffic accidents, with motorcycles accounting for five of the fatalities. The weekend saw heightened activity across several regions, including Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Madrid and Murcia, which extended a May 1 holiday into the following Monday. In Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, the timing coincided with the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix, drawing a large contingent of cyclists to the area.
On Friday there were no reported fatalities from three in the afternoon until midnight. By Saturday, however, five people had died and four others were injured in separate incidents.
One of the reported incidents occurred on the DP0905 road in Paderne, A Coruña, where a motorcyclist lost their life in a head-on collision.
Another fatality occurred in El Bosque, Cadiz, where a motorcyclist was killed in a collision on the A372. In the same state, two additional motorcyclists died in Puerto de Santa María on the A2001.
In Chillón, Ciudad Real, a pedestrian was killed after being run over on the CM4200, and in Agolada, Pontevedra, a tractor overturned on a local road, causing the death of its driver.
By eight o’clock on Monday, four fatal crashes had been recorded, resulting in four deaths and two injuries overall.
A passenger car on the CM200 near Almonacid de Zorita, Guadalajara, left the roadway, causing the death of one person.
Also on Sunday, a motorcyclist died on the A390 in Medina Sidonia, Cadiz. In Valdetorres, Badajoz, a collision with a pedestrian on BA142 led to another fatality. Additionally, a person was killed when a tourist road exit on a local road in Villanueva de Sijena, Huesca, went tragically wrong.
