During the III Edition of the Gravity Wave Awards held at CaixaForum Valencia, Estimar Hotels received the distinction “Small businesses, big impact” in recognition of its extraordinary commitment to reducing plastic pollution in the Mediterranean. The award underscored the hotel sector’s essential role in safeguarding the oceans and highlighted Estimar Hotels’ ongoing dedication to sustainable practices, including the recovery of six tons of plastic.
The ocean often serves as an accidental repository for vast amounts of plastic waste each year, with abandoned fishing nets accounting for nearly half of this pollution. These nets represent one of the most damaging forms of marine litter due to their long persistence and harmful effects on marine life, sometimes taking up to a millennium to decompose.
According to the jury, the award acknowledges Estimar Hotels’ exemplary commitment to creating positive impact through responsible, scalable sustainability initiatives.
In addition to Reale Seguros, other notable awardees included ISDIN, MINI Iberia, Imagin, and Real Betis Balompié, recognized for their outstanding collaborations with Gravity Wave across diverse fields.
Discarded fishing nets are reused to raise awareness against childhood cancer
Estimar Hotels has launched an initiative framing one kilogram of Mediterranean plastic per reservation as a model response to the growing threat of plastic pollution in the oceans. In this context, Estimar Hotels announced renewed collaboration with Gravity Wave for 2024. The Valencian Community Association of Families of Children with Cancer, known as Aspanion, works to raise awareness and visibility for childhood cancer. The project, titled For a Thousand Reasons and a Smile, involves creating 1,000 Aspanion keychains shaped like a yellow bow, crafted from yellow fishing nets recovered at sea by Gravity. All proceeds will support families affected by the disease through psychosocial, emotional, and economic services.
