An earthquake occurred near the islands of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean, as reported by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center. Seismologists assessed the event to be a magnitude 5.7 quake. The epicenter was positioned approximately 161 kilometers west of Neiafu, a town with around 4,300 residents. The seismic source originated at a depth near 242 kilometers. There was no information indicating a tsunami threat linked to this event.

Earlier, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was reported, this one described as occurring east of Tokyo, off the coast of Japan. Tremors were felt along the coastline of Chiba Prefecture. At the time, authorities did not detect any tsunami risk. The seismic source was estimated to be at a depth of about 50 kilometers. No casualties or damage were reported in connection with that event.

Residents in Tokyo reported strong shaking lasting about a minute, with furniture moving inside homes. In response, authorities activated the metropolitan earthquake warning system to alert residents and coordinate safety measures across the urban area.

In recent developments, an unrelated cultural event, a figure skating show titled Fantasy on Ice, featuring performers Tiffany Zagorski and Jonathan Gureiro, took place in the Makuhari region. The show proceeded alongside ongoing discussions about seismic activity in the Chiba area, with planners noting no direct impact on the event schedule due to the earthquakes in question.
