Drone attack on Kursk nuclear power plant
On October 26, Ukrainian forces conducted what officials described as a targeted strike using three unmanned aerial vehicles against the Kursk nuclear power plant. This account is given by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
According to the diplomat, one explosive drone crashed into a storage area for nuclear waste, damaging its walls. The remaining two drones impacted the station’s administrative building complex.
Zakharova condemned the incident as evidence that the Kiev regime is willing to cross dangerous lines, including actions that could trigger a nuclear disaster affecting multiple countries. She noted that the plant was a peaceful, civilian facility and that no other target had been identified in the initial assessments of the attack.
Preliminary information cited by a ministry spokesperson suggested that components used in the drones were supplied to Ukraine by Western nations.
Zakharova added that this crime could not have occurred without permission and likely on orders from Western sponsors. She urged governments around the world to condemn Kiev’s actions and warned of serious, potentially irreversible consequences.
She also called on international organizations, environmental groups, and civil society to evaluate the incident through a formal lens of terrorism and to respond appropriately.
The situation at the Kursk NPP
The day before the attack, officials reported no injuries or damage at the Kursk nuclear power plant as a result of the incident. Station personnel stated that operations remained stable, with power units Nos. 2, 3, and 4 operating normally according to the dispatch plan, while unit No. 1 was in a non-production state awaiting decommissioning. This information was shared through the Kursk NPP Telegram channel.
Experts noted that background radiation levels in and around the facility matched natural background values. Law enforcement personnel were described as actively working at the site.
What did the Ministry of Defense say?
The Defense Ministry reported that the Kiev regime attempted a terrorist attack in the Kursk region between 21:00 and 23:50 on October 26. The three drones were reportedly intercepted by the on-duty air defense forces. The ministry characterized the action as an attack thwarted by local air defense capabilities. The information was also shared via the regional government’s official Telegram channel.
Officials noted that there were no casualties and no material damage, and they thanked air defense personnel for their response. This incident is being monitored by regional authorities and international observers who are assessing the broader implications for security around civilian nuclear facilities.
