Deakin University Study Highlights How Washing Machine Settings Extend Fabric Lifespan

Researchers from Deakin University in Australia explored which washing machine settings help extend the life of laundry items. This finding was reported by Speech, a news portal.

Each day, households worldwide use water equivalent to about 21,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools for laundry. Fibers from clothing can enter air and water streams, often going unnoticed, while fabrics wear down over time. Misusing washing machines can contribute to environmental pollution and shorten clothing life.

Many factors influence outcomes: the type of washer, the chosen wash cycle, detergents, temperature, duration, fabric type, and thread construction. Top-loading models tend to be rougher on fabrics than front-loading counterparts.

For routine stains, short, cool or low-temperature cycles generally suffice. Longer or hotter cycles should be reserved for garments that truly need intensive cleaning. In practice, washing programs are selected based on the manufacturer’s guidance regarding water volume, agitation intensity, and temperature. Experts emphasize considering fabric type and finish when choosing settings.

Additionally, certain fabrics such as knits or wool are more prone to fiber loss and should be washed less often or by hand when possible. Consumers are advised to minimize chemical use and follow label directions to protect both garments and the environment.

In related guidance, a physician notes practical considerations for household cleaning routines, including floor care, underscoring the broader theme of mindful maintenance at home.
