The potential of a new artificial pancreas to improve diabetes management has shown promising results in clinical trials, according to researchers from the University of Virginia. Tandem Diabetes Care Control-IQ is a diabetes management system that automatically tracks glucose levels and adjusts insulin delivery. The device uses an insulin pump guided by a computer algorithm that responds to real-time glucose information. When needed, the system modifies the insulin dose to keep blood sugar within a target range. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved this system for individuals aged six and older who have type 1 diabetes.

In the latest trials, 369 participants aged 2 to 72 years took part. Of these, 256 were assigned to use Control-IQ while 113 served as controls. The findings indicate that users of the device were 13 percent more likely to maintain blood sugar in the target range compared with those relying on manual insulin injections. This improvement was observed both during daytime and nighttime, with the stronger effect occurring at night. The average hemoglobin A1c level among Control-IQ users fell from 7.5 percent to 7.0 percent, compared with a drop from 7.6 percent to 7.5 percent in the control group.

Based on the test results, the researchers concluded that the Control-IQ system should be considered for broad use by individuals living with type 1 diabetes, given its potential to stabilize glucose levels more consistently than conventional methods. In addition to efficacy, the trial highlighted the system’s capability to respond automatically to changing glucose patterns, reducing the need for constant manual adjustments and helping families manage daily treatment more smoothly. The device relies on continuous monitoring and rapid insulin dosing adjustments to maintain glycemic control across diverse daily activities and sleep cycles.
