The absence of pigmentation is partly due to the minimal light in its habitat. Yet changing ocean temperatures and other climate-related shifts influence its biology. Scientists are tracking how size and diet may respond to warming waters, while noting that much remains unknown about this species. It carries a single row of suckers on each tentacle, a feature that sets it apart from many relatives. Its body appears gelatinous and almost transparent, contributing to its extraordinary, almost ethereal appearance.

A study published after the initial discovery described how these ghostly deep sea octopuses lay eggs on the bodies of sponges that cling to metal-rich nodules on the seafloor. The relationship between these sponges and the nodules suggests a link to mining interests because of the metals they harbor, including manganese. The timing of egg-laying may reflect the life cycle needs of the species, with hatching potentially taking several years. These observations underscore the delicate balance between deep sea life and human activities that seek valuable minerals.

The physical traits of Casper octopuses vary with location and water type. Reports note that in warmer, tropical waters the arms may be longer and thinner, affecting feeding dynamics. Still, the full story of how this species survives and interacts with its cephalopod relatives remains largely unwritten, inviting ongoing scientific investigation.

Researchers emphasize that much about the Casper octopus remains unknown. The deep sea, with its hidden ecosystems, continues to harbor secrets that only careful exploration and long-term study can illuminate. The ghost octopus embodies the mystery of life at extreme depths, where adaptation meets the limits of human observation.
