Televisión Española has announced the successor who will take the baton for Telediario, following Carlos Franganillo at the start of the program’s new edition. Marta Carazo, who has reported from Brussels since August 2020, will assume the role of presenter after Franganillo’s move to Telecinco, marking a significant step in her distinguished career with a public broadcaster.
The professional path spans a 25-year career at a national public company, and Carazo will meet the task of presenting one of the newsroom’s major projects in Brussels, a city that has been central to her coverage. TVE confirmed the news through a press release that also notes Carazo will convene with media representatives on December 20 to outline the team’s upcoming coverage and priorities.
Her appointment comes amid the broader reshuffle following Mediaset’s decision to have Carlos Franganillo front the night edition of Informativos Telecino next season, succeeding Pedro Piqueras, who will deliver his final newscast on a Thursday near the end of the year. This shift has left a notable gap in the prime-time schedule that TVE aims to fill with experienced leadership and a clear, authoritative voice in European affairs.
Carazo’s career
Marta Carazo, born in Madrid in 1973, has served as a Brussels correspondent since 2020. In that period she reported on crucial European stories such as the Brexit process, vaccine deployment across the EU, and the evolving response to the war in Ukraine. Her beat allowed her to interview top leaders, including the NATO Secretary General, the head of European diplomacy, and senior figures within the European Parliament and the Council, providing a multi-faceted view of European decision making.
Last year she received the Salvador de Madariaga European Journalism Award in the Television category, an honor bestowed by the Union of European Journalists in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Spain and the Madrid Office of the European Parliament. The jury highlighted her ability to make European Union information accessible on television, not only by reporting decisions but by amplifying the voices of those most affected by them.
Carazo is a graduate of the Complutense University of Madrid in journalism. Her professional journey began with Europa Press Television, EFE TV, and Telemadrid. She launched her career in 1999 at RTVE, anchoring 24 Horas from 1999 to 2007 and later directing and presenting programs such as Casa de América and A Fondo from 2006 to 2009.
In 2009 she joined Telediario to cover matters related to the Royal Household. Her focus expanded to economics in 2012, a stint that culminated in leadership roles during 2018 and 2019. She also served as presenter and co-director of the Europe 2020 program from 2019 to 2020 and joined Telediario 1 in 2020, continuing to provide in-depth coverage of European affairs.
The network’s leadership expects Carazo to bring a strong, informed perspective to the 21:00 newscast, leveraging her extensive experience with European institutions and her track record of clear, thoughtful reporting. Her arrival is seen as a strategic move to strengthen broadcast coverage of European matters for audiences across Spain, with strong implications for viewers in Canada and the United States who follow European Union policy and its global impact.
