This Alicante coast hides a series of intimate, dreamlike spots, where sandy stretches meet rocky coves just right for a refreshing swim. Here we explore Cala Manzanera, a small stone-framed cove along Calp’s shoreline, visible from the nearby residential district. The Red Wall, one of the area’s most recognizable structures, dominates the scene and bears the signature of the renowned Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill.

Cala Manzanera sits on clean stone, a place of unusually calm waters. The cove measures about 40 meters in length and tends to be relatively uncrowded. It’s easy to reach by car, though arriving early helps secure a prime spot for sunbathing in the peak season. A practical tip is to pack booties in the backpack for comfortable ocean entry and safer movement along the rocky shoreline.

Legacy of Ricardo Bofill at Calp

The cove rests at the base of one of Calp’s most notable landmarks, Ricardo Bofill’s Red Wall. Beyond the wall, the bay houses a building crafted by the celebrated Catalan architect. The Manzanera social club, once a lively hub with a restaurant, a swimming pool, and even a pier, now lies in ruins. The design aimed to evoke the sensation of being at sea, and even in its current dilapidated state it offers a dramatic backdrop for photographs, with the Rock of Ifach towering in the distance. Calp’s town council has plans to rehabilitate the Social Club and restore the entire Cala Manzanera area.

Perfect place for snorkeling

The cove, strewn with small boulders, is ideal for snorkeling lovers and also suits cruising by rowboat or simply soaking in the sea views from a crystal-clear vantage. The scenery features Serra Gelada cliffs as a dramatic backdrop. There are no beachside bars, and there is no lifeguard service on site.
