In the First Division of the Balearic Islands County Court, the case involving a Stuttgart football player, Atakan Karazor, moved into a precautionary stage with bail set at 50,000 euros. He faces allegations of sexual assault in Ibiza, a matter now handled by the Administrative Court No. 4 of Ibiza as part of the ongoing investigation. Karazor has remained in precautionary detention since June 2022, a status that reflects concerns about flight risk and the seriousness of the accusations.

On Thursday, the court informed Karazor of its decision. The ruling also imposes restrictions that restrict prosecution and contact with the case at the Supreme Court of Appeals each month, should the football player try to leave prison after posting bail. The measure aims to prevent any contact with the victim and to preserve the integrity of the judicial process as it unfolds. A similar change affected another person under investigation in the same case, and both individuals had posted bail the previous day, according to forensic sources who could not confirm whether they had been released from custody.

Karazor and a second suspect were on holiday in Ibiza when they were arrested at dawn on June 8, accused of assaulting a young woman at a villa near the Cova Santa facility in Sant Josep. The incidents sparked a pre-trial phase, and at the end of June the court considered detention without bail for both detainees. Karazor’s defense team challenged the decision, asserting concerns about translation errors in testimony and seeking rectification of the order against the player. The Provincial Court released its decision on the appeal this Thursday and notified the prosecutor, rejecting the eviction petition. The Balearic Islands High Court of Justice indicated that even if the procedural status of Karazor changes, release on bail remains a possibility under the right conditions.

The court noted that the frustration of a potential right of process infringement would likely not progress, emphasizing that neither during appeal nor at trial did the defenses specify which particular issue or poorly translated answer could affect the investigating judge’s decision. Regarding precautionary detention without bail, the First Chamber of the Provincial Court pointed to the risk of flight given the charge range, estimated between six and twelve years in prison. The instruction published today explained that in Karazor’s country of origin, Germany, documents detailing social, personal, and professional ties have begun to be submitted. The court also referenced the player’s employment contract with a major league team through 2026 and property holdings in Germany as factors suggesting established roots there, which influence the assessment of flight risk.

The court highlighted that being an EU citizen and residing in a country with cooperation agreements on criminal investigations and prison administration requires German authorities to consider legal instruments that facilitate cooperation with other Member States. These instruments can support measures taken during the procedure and ensure that the person under investigation remains subject to decisions issued by the place of origin. The possibility of alternative sentencing by another Member State was cited as a factor in accepting bail for the accused.

The court stressed that the evidence would not be re-examined in detail while the initial order remains based on the victim’s statement and the corroborating testimony. The report that described the victim’s injuries as consistent with her account was acknowledged, yet the court underscored that the existence of allegations does not automatically seal the fate of the case. The decision reiterates the importance of a careful, proportional response that respects the integrity of the investigative record as the case proceeds toward resolution.
