Such measurements help researchers estimate growth patterns and health status within wild dolphin populations, where documentation of rare color morphs can illuminate broader genetic and ecological dynamics.

Albinism describes a genetic condition in which organisms fail to produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, fur, feathers, and eye color. In albino animals, the pigment deficiency often results in a stark white appearance and pink or red-tinged eyes due to the translucency of underlying tissues. Instances of albino dolphins are infrequent in scientific records. The case from Africa is part of a small but growing set of observations of color variations in wild dolphin populations. Notably, a separate incident in 2017 involved a three-year-old albino dolphin (Grampus griseus) spotted with its mother in California’s Monterey Bay, underscoring that such color anomalies occur in diverse places around the world. Researchers emphasize that documenting these rare individuals helps expand understanding of dolphin genetics, maternal care, and how wild populations adapt to different habitats. As with many rare phenotypes, each new sighting contributes valuable data to long-term monitoring programs and to discussions about diversity within marine ecosystems.
