Ana Buza, a 19-year-old who was found deceased beside a highway barrier in Carmona, Seville, in September 2019, became the focus of a gender-based violence murder investigation. The Seville Women’s Court opened new lines of inquiry by extending the probe and the investigation period to illuminate the events surrounding her death. An attorney for Ana’s family stated that new information has emerged and is highly significant, signaling fresh avenues for the case.
According to a computer expert hired by the family, an initial review of Ana’s phone revealed that several files were deleted on the day of her death, within minutes before and after the fatal incident. The expert noted a sizable amount of data on the device and added that the phone was erased again a week after the death, on September 13, 2019. There were also records from earlier dates, September 16, 18, 23, 24 and 25, suggesting data loss during a period when the phone was not accessible in the usual way.
The deletion reportedly could not have occurred automatically and appears to have been intentional. Questions point toward RV, Ana’s partner, who had claimed that Ana had jumped from a moving car. He later died by suicide before any further action could be taken. The investigation by the Violence Against Women Court identified a nearby VR phone connection within ten meters of Ana’s body the day after her death.
19 days without terminal
The father, Antonio, explained that the phone was analyzed only after 19 days and about 72 meters from the scene where Ana’s body was found. He described a triangle formed by the body, the car, and the phone, and questioned how the phone ended up in that location without a visible explanation. The mother of the person being investigated reportedly testified at the end of August 2023. The family wondered whether an agent had moved or discarded the device and who might have been responsible.
Following renewed family inquiries, it became essential to clarify the timing and handling of information because the expert report indicated manipulation around the days when the terminal’s location was still uncertain. The expert also noted striking findings about Ana’s computer, and the family indicated ongoing work on the matter. A detailed report is being prepared for the court to present further information.
Since 2019, Ana’s death has drawn attention from many professionals, including criminalists, forensic analysts, and accident reconstruction specialists. The family emphasizes that their goal is to uncover the truth rather than to accuse any innocent party. There is broad agreement that the events surrounding Ana’s death require thorough examination. The initial version of the event described by RV suggesting a suicide is now viewed with increasing skepticism and scientific scrutiny.
Strange circumstances
Those who knew Ana recall a bright, cooperative student who faced a difficult situation. The time around the incident was marked by confusion and unanswered questions. The location was Kilometer 511 of the A-4 motorway near Carmona, early in the morning, with emergency responders unable to revive her. Ana had been returning from her mother’s house with RV, and plans to spend the weekend together had been interrupted by the tragedy. The family sought clarity from the initial responders, noting that several officers did not provide direct explanations in the immediate aftermath. The official version reported by RV described a suicide scenario in which Ana allegedly jumped from the moving car, a narrative now questioned by others who knew her well.
Four versions
Antonio Buza engaged actively in the case as investigations continued. A court official initially accepted RV’s account, which evolved with time into multiple versions. Questions arose about possible vehicle damage, uncomfortable inconsistencies in witness statements, and the absence of clear evidence such as broken windows. Antonio recalled discussions with his daughter’s mother, who offered memories that did not always align with later testimony. A family member suggested that money concerns played a role, while others emphasized Ana’s academic excellence and potential for a different path. The family noted a shift in the narrative as new details emerged, including a fifth account describing a scenario where Ana’s backpack contributed to an accidental fall.
Case closed
The court ultimately concluded that Ana’s death was a suicide, dismissing further action. The family challenged the decision, arguing that the investigation did not receive the time or attention it deserved. The prosecutor and judge maintained their stance, but the family persisted with calls to reopen the case, citing ongoing concerns about potential criminal elements that had not been fully explored.
Antonio continued to pursue the matter, noting that the provincial court later reopened the investigation due to apparent signs of criminal involvement that had not been fully resolved. This renewed effort led to a lengthy judicial process, culminating in a decision to extend the inquiry under the Violence Against Women framework. The proceedings called for a new maximum period to complete the instruction as permitted by law. The aim remained clear: to uncover the full truth behind Ana’s death.
A toxic relationship
Friends, family, and many locals in Carmona remember Ana as someone who faced controlling behavior and jealousy within her relationship. Neighbors described a pattern of restrictions and isolation, including concerns that Ana might be prevented from leaving social spaces. Classmates noted that RV sometimes monitored her movements closely. An email sent months after Ana’s death to a school counselor, reported by her family, suggested she had sought help for jealousy and violence in the relationship. Ana’s ambitions remained as she had begun her second year of philosophy, with plans to pursue her studies further. Her father highlighted that her life was cut short before she could begin the next chapter, and the family remains determined to establish accountability for what happened.
As they continue their fight for answers, the family hopes to demonstrate that RV may have been involved in Ana’s death and to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined. The pursuit of truth remains a central pillar of their resolve.
