The fight against gender-based violence remains unresolved, and despite strides in addressing this grave issue, statistics continue to reveal its severity. Among women, awareness about reporting abusive partners has grown, yet many still endure physical or psychological harm in silence, overwhelmed by fear of their abusers.
69 women murdered in Alicante over two decades
In Spain, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence records 1,240 feminicides by current or former partners since 2003. Over the past twenty years, the province of Alicante saw 69 women killed by their partners or ex-partners, with a recent fatality in l’Alfàs del Pi bringing the total to 70. This places Alicante as the third-highest province for intimate-partner femicides in the last twenty years, behind Madrid with 131 cases and Barcelona with 122.
24 children left orphans in ten years
From January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2023, killings of women by their partners or ex-partners in Alicante left 24 children without parents.
8,215 reports of abuse
According to the statistical portal of the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, 2023 saw 8,215 abuse reports in Alicante, down 16% from 2022, which recorded 9,780 reports.
108,704 calls to the 016 helpline
The information and legal guidance service for gender-based violence, accessed via the 016 number, received 108,704 calls nationwide last year. The majority occurred between 11:00 and 12:00. Since its launch in September 2007, Alicante has logged 50,831 calls, with 38,200 made by victims, 10,546 by relatives or close friends, and 1,723 by other individuals.
5,040 active cases of victims
The Viogén system, which provides comprehensive monitoring of abused women, reported 5,040 active victim cases on December 31, 2023. Among these, only one woman was at extreme risk, 79 at high risk, 920 at medium risk, 2,161 at low risk, and 1,879 with no assessed risk. All women with assessed risk levels have police protection tailored to their situation. Last year also saw a national 17% rise in women under police protection.
368 inmates imprisoned for abuse
Last year closed with 368 individuals incarcerated in Alicante and Villena correctional facilities to serve sentences for gender-based violence crimes.
140 electronic monitoring devices in use
As of December 31, 2023, 140 Alicante residents were living under electronic monitoring to protect themselves from their aggressors. Courts decide when to deploy these monitoring tools to ensure compliance with restraining orders in abuse cases.
1,396 Atempro service users in Alicante
The Atempro helpline, dedicated to support and protection for violence victims, closed 2023 with 1,396 active users. Since 2005, it has recorded 12,243 enrollments and 10,847 terminations. By year’s end, Alicante reported the country’s highest active-user rate of 1,675.9 per million women aged 15 and older.
1,915 women received active insertion income
Between January and December of the previous year, 1,915 women who experienced abuse in Alicante received the active insertion income, slightly fewer than the 2,066 beneficiaries in 2022. In the same period, 789 discounted contracts were recorded for women victims of gender violence.
390 temporary residence and work permits
In the past year, 390 temporary residence and work permits were granted to foreign women who were victims of gender violence. Since March 2005, 1,910 foreign women who reported abuse have received these permits, with Alicante contributing significantly to this support.
1,692 protection orders granted
During the last year, 1,915 protection orders were requested in Alicante, and the province’s courts granted 1,692 in favor of the complainants, while the remainder were denied.
