Alcampo marked its twentieth anniversary in Alicante with a celebration that highlighted the symbol of the city’s retail landscape. The event, held at the Plaza de la 2 de Marzo shopping center, recalled the hypermarket opening in 2003 and brought together the mayor, Luis Barcala, along with the center manager, all of whom reflected on two decades of growth and community involvement. The day served as a reminder of how Alcampo has become a fixture in the Alicante retail scene and a partner to local producers and residents alike.
The manager underscored the company’s ongoing commitment to local suppliers, noting that about 160 Alicante-based producers are part of the supply chain and that the business transactions with these suppliers generate substantial annual value. In practical terms, local products contribute to a robust local economy by supporting jobs and sustaining regional agricultural and manufacturing activities.
Additionally, the announcement highlighted the scale of Alcampo’s employment in the city, with a workforce of around 250 people dedicated to the Alicante market. This team complements staff at the second Alcampo location in the city, the Vistahermosa shopping center, which opened in 2015 and continues to broaden the retailer’s footprint in the area.
Over its twenty years in Alicante, Alcampo has translated its business model into tangible results that prioritize accessibility, value, and service. The company reiterated its promise to provide a diverse, high-quality shopping experience at competitive prices while maintaining a strong social and environmental stance. The emphasis remains on healthy, locally sourced products and responsible practices that benefit the community and the environment.
We will continue to work toward sustainable economic growth that is fair to society and respectful of the environment in Alicante. The company plans to maintain its enthusiastic approach to local collaboration, working hand in hand with the best professionals and in close cooperation with local producers and landowners, as stated by the management team.
Second Hand Initiative
In conjunction with the anniversary celebrations, Alcampo announced the launch of a second-hand clothing corner in Alicante, developed in partnership with Moda Re-Cáritas. This new corner features five modules that display nearly 400 clothing items for men, women, and children, as well as accessories. The project advances circular economy goals by giving garments a second life while fostering social inclusion and support for people at risk of exclusion.
Alcampo Expands Its Footprint and Ambitions
Alongside neighborhood stores, Alcampo has integrated its different formats under a common strategic umbrella that includes hypermarkets, supermarkets, and proximity outlets. The broader network now comprises 529 stores, including 80 hypermarkets and small hypermarkets and 449 supermarkets, 128 of which operate under franchise agreements. The group also runs 52 petrol stations and a comprehensive online trading platform, together employing more than 23,000 people.
The company has laid out a clear path toward carbon neutrality, setting ambitious targets for direct emissions reductions through 2043. These efforts align with the goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, with a concerted push to 1.5 degrees in line with international climate accords. The plan reflects a sustained commitment to responsible business practices that balance growth with environmental stewardship.
