Gender violence casts a long shadow over the country once again as femicides unfold in Benidorm, Malaga, and Palencia. In each case, women aged 68, 39, and 32 were allegedly killed by partners or ex partners. Investigations are under way by the Government Delegation Against Sexist Violence. In two of these cases the perpetrators died by suicide, preventing prosecution for their actions.
If the sexist motive is confirmed, these incidents will contribute to a growing tally of femicides that continues to alarm the nation. Since 2022, statistics have been compiled showing a rise in women killed by partners or ex partners in Spain, with more cases under review as data accumulates.
Equality Minister Irene Montero condemned the killings, saying there is anger and deep pain for the three lives lost simply for being women. She urged communities not to accept denial of the issue and to stand united against sexist violence.
Today additional details emerged indicating three murders investigated as sexist violence. The sentiment remains clear: anger and sorrow over the loss of three women and a call to confront the issue head on.
Securing the lives of women is a duty, and stopping exposure to sexist violence must occur at every stage of life.
Crime in Benidorm
In Benidorm, police found the body of a 68 year old woman at home after reporting that her husband, a 73 year old man, had died in a traffic accident. Investigators believe the husband committed the sexist crime before dying in a subsequent car crash. The vehicle left the road and collided with a truck, resulting in immediate death. The victim, originally from Guipúzcoa, sustained two chest wounds and died at the scene.
32 Years Old
The 32 year old case in Palencia is another line of investigation. National Police officers found the young woman at her residence when reporting the death of her 36 year old partner, who allegedly tried to harm himself by stepping onto danger. Based on the available evidence, investigators are pursuing a pattern of sexist violence linked to the life of the victim. The record shows several cases where the killer died by suicide after the act, and it is expected that the total will rise with the Palencia case considered among those where the perpetrator took his own life.
Six Months Lost
A third known case within the last 24 hours concerns a 39 year old woman who had been missing since March. Police recovered her body from an industrial site where it had been concealed. Her partner, aged about 40, has confessed to the crime and remains in custody awaiting trial. The survivor’s family notes a history of reported ill treatment dating back to 2012, though no protective measures were ultimately put in place. This year has seen several children left without a parent due to gender violence, underscoring the lasting impact on families and communities.
Ask for Help
There are resources available for those affected by violence against women. In Spain, a free and confidential helpline operates across multiple languages to provide support. Information is available via email as well, and psychosocial care is offered through established channels. Additional services exist for minors and other members of the community seeking assistance with gender-based violence.
