UN extends mandate of peacekeeping mission in Lebanon for another year

The UN Security Council agreed on Wednesday to renew the mandate of the peace mission deployed by the organization in Lebanon for another year (FINUL), currently under Spanish command.

Fifteen members of the Security Council approved unanimously. A decision that generally does not alter UNIFIL’s mandateResponsible for ensuring peace on the border between Lebanon and Israel, facilitating humanitarian access to the civilian population, and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons.

To this end, it also supports the capabilities and modernization of the Lebanese Armed Forces and their work on the Israeli border, south of the Litani River.

Spanish General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz has been in command of UNIFIL since last February, complicated by the serious crisis in Lebanon and tensions in the Middle East.
