Specialists of the Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) named after Kant, together with their foreign colleagues, have created new nanoparticles with advanced properties for use in cancer therapy. DEA News”With reference to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.
Experts are reportedly synthesizing new nanostructures from gold and iron oxides. Such nanostructures refer to objects consisting of several functional compounds with different physicochemical properties, and their magnetic and optical properties depend on the mutual arrangement of the components.
Alexander Omelyanchik, a researcher at the Science and Education Center of the Belarusian Federal University “Smart Materials and Biomedical Applications”, said that the aim of the study is to create and study multifunctional nanoparticles with special optical and magnetic properties.
The new nanoparticles gained enhanced magnetic and optical properties due to their unique star shape. They can be used for photothermal cancer treatment, in which diseased cells are heated and destroyed by light. The scientists stated that the resulting nanoparticles are safe for healthy human cells.
They tested the effect of nanoparticles on breast cancer cells and cell culture. in which the walls of blood vessels are formed normally. Cells were preliminarily maintained in a culture medium containing predetermined concentrations of nanoparticles. It turned out that the nanostructures have good biocompatibility, that is, they have low toxicity and do not affect the viability of healthy cells.
At the same time, under the influence of a low frequency alternating magnetic field, the viability of cancer cells with nanostructures decreased by 65% due to local heating of nanoparticles and by 45% under the influence of light.
