Clara Thomann from California was a physics teacher and six months pregnant when she and her partner Elliot arrived on the Greek island. This would be their last holiday together before the birth of their first child, for whom the woman came up with the name Teodoro and told her loved ones about it.
The couple went for a walk to the village of Plakias on Crete’s south coast on December 23. Near Preveli Monastery, Clara lost her balance and fell into the cliff from a height of 50 meters. The rescue team spent the next few hours trying to reach the victim, eventually lifting him from the bottom of the cliff and taking him to a medical center in Rethymnon and then to a hospital near Chania.
The child did not survive after conception and she herself suffered multiple fractures and was admitted to intensive care. For the next few days, doctors fought for his life, but he was powerless. The tourist’s heart stopped on December 29. The family agreed to donate his organs.
