Scientists from Uppsala University found that beta blockers led to a slight increase in depressive symptoms in heart attack patients. Research results It was published In European Heart Journal (EHJ).

Beta blockers, traditionally used to treat patients after heart attacks, can block the action of adrenaline on specific receptors that cause vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure. For decades these drugs were thought to be the mainstay of preventing another heart attack, but recent evidence questions their primary importance.

The study, conducted between 2018 and 2023, included 806 patients who had a heart attack but did not have heart failure. Half were given beta blockers, the other half were not. The 100 patients who took these medications before the study began reported more severe symptoms of depression.

The analysis showed that patients taking beta blockers had higher levels of depressive symptoms, but these drugs were not critical to the patients’ recovery.

Previously it became clearIt can accelerate the development of heart disease by up to 28 years.
