Scientists from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) presented a software package for high-quality medical rehabilitation at home. Special applications are able to record the patient’s movements, recognize and correct errors in exercises, the press service of the scientific institution told socialbites.ca.
According to WHO statistics, approximately 2.4 billion people in the world need rehabilitation. We are talking not only about recovery after injuries or surgeries, but also about help with chronic diseases and age-related changes.
MIPT developers presented the following scenario of using the online medical rehabilitation system.
The patient creates his account by installing the application on his computer/phone. He then chooses the rehabilitation doctor from the list of specialists. After verifying the identity, it is possible to access the list of exercises that the doctor individually recommends for rehabilitation, taking into account the characteristics of this clinical case. The patient starts doing these, and the system reports errors and corrects them in real time. Training data and resulting statistics are visible to both the patient and his doctor.
“The system monitors the functionality of the load against control points in comparison with the reference execution of the exercise. If we are also talking about restoring range of motion, the system will take into account the patient’s progress (for example, gradual increase of squat depth in the exercise). The system transmits the video data stream to the server, where it is processed and feedback is generated about the accuracy of the application, which is sent back to the patient,” said Andrei Berezovsky, a graduate student at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, project manager for creating a remote rehabilitation system.
According to MIPT experts, a prototype of the new rehabilitation system will be prepared for testing within the next six months.
