Scientists from the University of Birmingham’s School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Science have found that carrying 14 “slim genes” is important for rapid weight loss. 38 people between the ages of 20 and 40 participated in the study in England. Before the experiment began, subjects provided biomaterial samples for genetic testing. The scientists recorded whether each participant was a carrier of 14 so-called “weakness genes.”
After completing the preparatory phase, the participants underwent a training program – for two months, volunteers were required to jog for half an hour three times a week. Subjects were also advised to adhere to their normal diet and lifestyle.
Eight weeks later, the researchers conducted a follow-up weighing. People who had most of the genetic markers for thinness lost up to five kilograms (11 pounds) during the study, while people without them lost an average of two kilograms (4.4 pounds).
Scientists have found that the real helper in the fight for slimness is the PPARGC1A gene, which encodes PGC-1-a, a protein that helps regulate metabolism. According to the researchers, this gene was responsible for almost two-thirds of the weight lost.
Commenting on the results, scientists noted that a particular genetic profile alone does not accelerate the weight loss process without diet and exercise.
