Humanity is approaching the upper limit of life expectancy. This conclusion was reached by American scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The research was published in the scientific journal magazine Nature Aginig (NatAge).
Life expectancy is an estimate of the average number of years a person born in a given year could live if the mortality rate remained constant. Life expectancy is one of the main indicators of health in the world.
In the new study, the team tracked life expectancy estimates from 1990 to 2019 from a database managed by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
The results showed that women continue to live longer than men, on average. The increase in overall life expectancy continues, but the process has begun to slow down. In the 1990s, the global rate increased by 2.5 years in 10 years. It only took 1.5 years, from 2010 to 2020.
According to the best-case scenario, life expectancy is expected to increase by another 1.5 years from 2020 to 2030.
Researchers also noted an increase in the number of centenarians in the world, but this is due to an increase in the overall human population. Experts believe that in the near future, in most countries, less than 15 percent of women and 5 percent of men will reach the 100th anniversary.
