Summer 2024 has been revealed to be the hottest on record, breaking many historical records, a new report says Services EU Climate Observations Copernicus (C3S).
“The last three months of 2024 saw the planet’s warmest June and August, the warmest day on record, and the warmest northern summer on record. This string of record temperatures increases the likelihood that 2024 will be the warmest year on record,” said C3S Deputy Director.
According to the report, the average temperature in the Northern Hemisphere for June, July and August was 16.8°C. This would make the summer of 2024 0.03°C warmer than the previous temperature record-breaking summer of 2023.
Copernicus also found that the average global temperature over the past 12 months from September 2023 to August 2024 was the highest ever recorded in any 12-month period: 0.76°C above the average from 1991 to 2020.
The C3S climate monitoring service dataset dates back to 1940.
Previously on Earth ended A 13-month period of temperature records.
