Scientists from the College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University (Taiwan) found that people with type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing asthma and vice versa. Research results presented At the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
The study used data from 17 million people. To investigate the relationship between asthma and diabetes and possible contributing factors, the researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research on this topic. To do this, the scientists used four large medical publication databases and identified 14 suitable articles.
The analysis showed that asthma and diabetes are closely linked. People with asthma are 28% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people without asthma. At the same time, diabetes was associated with almost double the risk of developing diabetes.
Scientists have explained that the two conditions may have common causes or factors. These include hypertension (high blood pressure) and dyslipidaemia (impaired levels of blood fats such as cholesterol).
