Urologist Daria Firsova of the Fomina Clinic network told socialbites.ca that swelling in the abdomen, scrotum and limbs, as well as swelling of the face and especially the eyelids, may indicate nephrotic syndrome.

“Nephrotic syndrome is a symptom complex that develops against the background of kidney damage. It is manifested by a large or, conversely, a small amount of protein in the urine, severe edema. At the same time, a person maintains normal blood pressure. Much depends on the causes of the development of the syndrome, Firsova said.

According to the doctor, the symptom complex develops due to a decrease in the functional activity of the kidneys in the presence of kidney diseases or pathologies that occur with secondary involvement of the kidneys.

“The causes of nephrotic syndrome include diabetes, renal vascular thrombosis, preeclampsia, kidney tumors, pyelonephritis and other pathologies,” the doctor said.

If edema occurs, you should undergo general urine and blood tests, and also consult a urologist or nephrologist.
