Scientists from Harvard Medical School found that only one in ten people age well. Women are 29% more likely to age healthily than men. reports Daily Mail edition.
Researchers analyzed data on the health and lifestyle of more than seven thousand volunteers over the age of fifty. They identified four main factors that contribute to effective and healthy aging: the absence of chronic diseases, stable mental state, maintenance of mental alertness and regular social interaction.
It turned out that only 11.9% of the participants (almost one in ten) met these criteria. Scientists also calculated that those who follow a healthy lifestyle are 3.5 times more likely to age well. A healthy lifestyle meant a balanced diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking and moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The study found that women are 29% more likely to achieve healthy aging than men. Additionally, higher levels of education and income are associated with healthier people aged 50 and older.
