Antidepressants and heartburn medications may lose their therapeutic effects if taken with coffee. About this post Daily Mail It has been said London GP Natalie Rout and Professor Parastu Donyai, Scientific Director of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Raut said many people are aware of the consequences of taking high blood pressure medications and blood thinners with caffeine-based beverages. The stimulating effects of coffee or energy drinks can increase the risk of adverse side effects or may not have any effect at all. However, there are also less obvious groups of medications that should be avoided before and after coffee is taken.

These medications include proton pump inhibitors, a class of drugs that are intended to treat symptoms of acid-related gastrointestinal conditions such as heartburn. The truth is that caffeine stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid. This effect is the exact opposite of what the person is trying to achieve with the medication.

Professor Donyai added that some antidepressants, such as fluvoxamine (a type of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI), should also not be taken with coffee. Fluvoxamine blocks the P450 enzyme, which increases the time it takes for caffeine to be cleared from the body. This puts you at risk of side effects such as rapid heartbeat, insomnia, increased nervous arousal, anxiety and irritability.
