Frequent use of social networks leads to a decrease in a person’s cognitive abilities, Vera Tretyakova, psychophysiologist, candidate of chemical sciences, researcher at the Neurocognitive Research Center of Moscow State University of Psychology and Education and senior lecturer at the Department of General Psychology at the Institute of Experimental Psychology of Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, told socialbites.ca.
“The frequent distractions and small pieces of information that come with social media can reduce a person’s ability to focus on a single task and think deeply. As a result, this type of thinking and the brain activation patterns that encourage it can become automatic, leading to difficulties in performing tasks that require long-term concentration,” the expert said.
According to him, the constant flow of information generated every minute on social networks can lead to cognitive overload, reduced concentration ability and memory impairment.
“Every time a person views their news feed or receives a notification, their brain has to process a large amount of information. Constant notifications about new messages, likes, comments, and news cause constant interruptions, make it difficult to concentrate, and increase cognitive load, Tretyakova noted.
General recommendations to reduce the negative effects include: finding an alternative to your social media urge, monitoring the time you spend on social media, turning off unnecessary notifications, using it responsibly, doing a regular digital detox, and other activities such as sports, reading, hobbies, and real-life communication.
