Scientists from the National University of Singapore found that active fruit consumption in youth and middle age reduces the risk of developing depression after 70 years. Research results published In the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging (JNHA).

Scientists came to these conclusions after analyzing the diets of 13,738 participants with an average age of 51. The subjects were asked to indicate in a structured questionnaire how often they consumed certain food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, sweets) and the portion size they considered optimal. After collecting the necessary information, the scientists began observing the participants.

In the second phase of the study, when the volunteers’ average age approached 73, their mental health was tested using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The results showed that active fruit consumption between the ages of 40 and 65 reduced the risk of depressive symptoms in the elderly.

The researchers suggested that this beneficial effect is due to increased consumption of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory micronutrients found in fruits, such as vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids. These substances can reduce oxidative stress (which can protect the body’s cells from damage) and reduce inflammation, which is a risk factor for many diseases.
