The acting Minister of Labor and Social Protection for the region, Alla Barkhatnova, confirmed a severe flood impact linked to the emergency at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. The statement referenced by the television channel Tavria indicates that around 15,000 households faced flooding as a direct result of the incident.
Residents faced dangerous conditions through the night, with some climbing onto roofs as rising waters forced evacuations. Emergency authorities were on the ground throughout the night, carrying out sustained evacuations to safeguard people in the affected areas. In Barkhatnova’s briefing, the scale of the flood was reiterated, noting that about 15,000 households had experienced flooding.
In the early hours of June 6, the upper section of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, located in the Kherson region near Novaya Kakhovka, sustained damage. The breach triggered widespread flooding across dozens of settlements, including the cities of Kherson and New Kakhovka. Some communities were inundated entirely as waters rose quickly. Vladimir Saldo, the regional administrator, indicated that as many as 40,000 people remained within the disaster zone at that time (Source: Tavria TV).
Volodymyr Saldo, the former acting governor of the Kherson district, later reported that a total of 35 settlements spanning three districts had been submerged due to the dam’s collapse at the Kakhovska hydroelectric facility. Local authorities continued to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts for residents caught in the floodwaters (Source: Tavria TV).
