Eyelash extension glue and special serums that increase the length and thickness of the hairs can cause the development of conjunctival erosion, blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis and allergic reactions. About this publication Conversation It has been said Adam Taylor, Professor and Director of the Clinical Anatomy Training Centre at Lancaster University.
According to Taylor, more than 60% of women suffer from keratoconjunctivitis – an eye disease in which the cornea and conjunctiva (the lining of the inner surface of the eyelids) become inflamed at the same time after eyelash glue gets into the eye. 40% have an allergic reaction with redness and itching of the eyelids after poor-quality extensions.
The expert added that not all consumer and professional eyelash glue manufacturers correctly state the ingredients included in the product on the packaging. Some brands add the chemical formaldehyde and other preservatives to their products, potentially causing toxic conjunctivitis and conjunctival erosion. When the conjunctiva erodes, the layer of cells on the surface of the cornea, called the epithelium, separates from the layer beneath it. This painful condition can negatively affect your vision.
The most frequently reported complication after eyelash extensions is blepharitis – inflammation or irritation of the eyelids. Taylor explained that when artificial hair is glued to the base of the eyelashes, bacteria can begin to accumulate in the hair follicles located at the edges of the eyelids. Also, artificial eyelashes or glue residues can block the release of antimicrobial secretions from the follicle, which threatens the formation of barley – purulent inflammation.
The professor explained that there is no need to completely abandon eyelash extensions. Taylor recommends contacting experienced professionals and not using extension services on an ongoing basis to maintain eye health.
