Sometimes gonorrhea can occur with symptoms of acute cystitis – frequent and painful urination, as well as heavy bleeding during menstruation. This is what Marina Nikolaeva, dermatovenerologist at the Lahta Clinic, told socialbites.ca.
Gonorrhea is a contagious disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus). These bacteria can be found in warm, moist areas of the body, such as the throat, rectum, penis, and vagina. In men, the first symptoms usually appear within 10 days; about 70% of women have no symptoms.
“Gonorrhea in women is in most cases asymptomatic. Sometimes the infection manifests itself in the form of vaginal itching, mucopurulent vaginal discharge, intermenstrual bleeding, and heavy bleeding during menstruation. Sometimes gonorrhea manifests itself with symptoms of acute cystitis – frequent and painful urination. A rare complication of gonorrhea in women is inflammation of the pelvic organs (uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries): the appearance of abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, pain during intercourse, high body temperature, weakness,” the doctor said.
In men, gonorrhea often causes yellowish, whitish or greenish purulent discharge from the urethra, as well as a burning sensation, especially pronounced during urination, itching in the external genital area and swelling of the foreskin.
“Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease; it is transmitted from person to person through unprotected sexual intercourse, that is, through contact with areas affected by the bacteria. Therefore, the disease can affect the genitals, the anus and the oral cavity. Gonorrhea in the larynx and pharynx, as well as in the rectum, is often asymptomatic, but the patient may also be bothered by pain and mucous discharge,” the doctor said.
