After the armed rebellion organized by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian government plans to tighten liability for such crimes in the Criminal Code. As the publication writes, “Vedomosti”, The proposed changes include differentiation of punishment depending on the role of the perpetrators (organizers or participants) and provide for the possibility of immunity from liability in case of voluntary and timely reporting to the authorities about an impending crime.
It was proposed to divide Article 279 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Armed rebellion”) into three parts. The first and second sections provide for liability for organizing or participating in an insurrection (imprisonment from 15 to 20 years with deprivation of liberty for up to two years). The third part of the article provides for liability or severe consequences (fine from 15 to 20 years or life imprisonment) for victims during the riot.
Prigozhin’s rebellion lasted more than a day, and Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the events as a blow to the country and promised to punish those responsible.
After talks with Prigozhin, the parties agreed to stop actions on the territory of the Russian Federation. Participants in the rebellion were asked to sign contracts with security agencies. The criminal case for the rebellion was dropped due to the fact that the participants stopped their activities.
