A method of immersing critical heatstroke patients in ice is beginning to be tested in the United States. This was reported by Associated Press (AP).
Last week, extreme heat warnings were issued in the USA. Temperatures are expected to exceed 43.3°C. The past three years have seen a sharp increase in cases of severe heat illness in the United States. Approximately 40% of patients do not survive. America’s hottest big city, Phoenix, is testing a new tactic to help treat heatstroke. Last year, 645 heat-related deaths were reported here.
Rescuers will now submerge heatstroke victims in ice on the way to local hospitals. This method will cool the patient’s body within a few minutes. The new approach has already saved one person in critical condition suffering from heatstroke.
