Scientists from the University of Western Australia found that men with very low levels of the hormone testosterone in their bodies have an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and other causes. Research results published In the journal Annals of Internal Medicine (AIM).
The study by Australian scientists is based on the results of 11 previously published scientific papers on the relationship between sex hormones and the risk of death from various diseases. It is stated that the meta-analysis includes large and long-term studies (including follow-up of participants for more than five years). Scientists sought to understand how different levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estrogen affect men’s health.
The results showed that men with very low total testosterone levels were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease and other causes. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone that determines the development of secondary sexual characteristics, puberty and normal sexual function in men. The main functions of the hormone include activation of potency and libido, sperm synthesis, maintenance of optimal bone density and stimulation of muscle growth.
Scientists explained that men with baseline blood testosterone levels below 213 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) or estrogen concentrations below 5.1 pmol/L (picomoles per liter) had a higher risk of death from various causes. A decrease in testosterone levels to 153 mg/dL was significantly associated with a higher likelihood of death from complications of cardiovascular disease.
