Scientists from Hanyang University School of Medicine in South Korea have found that tuberculosis is a significant risk factor for the development of many types of cancer. results presented On the website of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).

72,542 tuberculosis patients and the same number of healthy volunteers participated in the study. The scientists collected data on the subjects’ physical health, lifestyle, income level, place of residence and age. The researchers then began following the participants for an average of 67 months (a clear follow-up period could not be determined due to unforeseen circumstances such as relocation and death).

After the observation period, scientists found that the incidence of cancer in patients with tuberculosis was significantly higher (80% for all types) compared to the general population. In particular, tuberculosis is associated with a 3.6-fold increased risk of lung cancer, a 2.4-fold increased risk of blood cancer, and a 2.2-fold increased risk of uterine, endometrial and ovarian cancer. In addition, with tuberculosis, the probability of colorectal cancer increased by 57%, thyroid cancer by 56%, and esophagus and stomach cancer by 55%.
