American multi-role attack aircraft A-10 Thunderbolt II does not meet the new conflict conditions. The publication writes about this National Interestexplains the decision to delete combat vehicles.
“Despite debates over the retirement of ground attack aircraft due to their cost effectiveness and outstanding performance in ground support missions, the A-10 design based on the powerful GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun appears increasingly incompatible with the requirements. It emerges as a result of future conflicts, especially against technologically advanced adversaries such as China,” the publication writes.
This explains the sending of the first batch of A-10 attack aircraft from the US Air Force’s 355th Airlift Wing to the aircraft graveyard. A total of 76 close support aircraft are planned to be retired.
The aircraft is a veteran of the US Air Force, having entered service with its first modifications in 1976.
