According to a study by nutritionists at the University of Massachusetts, dried fruits, fruit purees and canned fruits contain the highest amounts of fiber and nutrients. These types of foods are also low in sugar. Research results published In the nutrition magazine.
To find out which fruit-based snacks are healthiest, scientists analyzed the nutritional content of 1,497 types of fruit snacks.
To compare whether snacks were healthy or not, researchers used the Nutrient Rich Foods (NRF) index, which calculates an overall nutritional quality score based on a specific group of nutrients in foods. This model considers the content of desirable nutrients (protein, dietary fiber, potassium, vitamin D, calcium, iron) and those that should be limited in the diet (saturated fat, cholesterol, added sugar, and sodium).
The results showed that dried fruit, fruit puree and canned fruit were the least sweet and fatty. Additionally, such foods contained high levels of fiber, an indigestible fiber that is important for normal bowel function. Relatively “unhealthy” snacks included marmalade and fruit-based bars.
